Mini Beagle

A Mini Beagle of the Medieval times is not actually an ancestor of the modern Miniature Beagle. Pocket and Glove Beagles used for tracking rabbits and hares under shrubs and bushes were very popular among the royalty and nobility. Miniature Beagles were carried to the hunt in saddle bags and gloves, as it was difficult for them to cross a rough terrain. Glove and Pocket Beagles became extinct in the 19th century, as there was no need in tiny dogs in hunting fox and large game. Beagle breeders of the 19th century preserved the working abilities and talents of the breed, but they didn’t care about preserving the size of the dogs, which was of no practical value.

A Mini Beagle of today originated in the middle of the 20th century as a smaller version of the standard Beagle. The sole purpose of the Miniature Beagle was entertaining the family. These cute and funny dogs are not suited for any job except brightening up the life of the owner. These little creatures are gentle, friendly, curious, and intelligent. They love everyone and enjoy being in the center of attention. Miniature Beagles are good with children, adults, and senior people. They don’t need long walks. A short walk once a day is enough for a small dog.

Compared to the Standard Beagle, the Mini Beagle is quiet and easy to control, but a hound personality is typical even of a smaller Beagle. Miniature Beagles need much exercise for both their mind and body. They tend to roam, if left unsupervised and walked without a leash. Like all hounds, these dogs cannot be trusted with smaller pets, like hamsters and guinea pigs. Miniature Beagles are big dogs in a small body. They are often a challenge to housebreak and train.

Miniature Beagles will do well in an apartment, if they are taken for a walk at least once a day. These dogs are very active indoors, but besides physical exercises these inquisitive and communicative creatures need to see new places and meet new people and dogs. Miniature Beagles are wonderful escape artists. When bored in the yard, they will get out and search for a way to entertain themselves. A Mini Beagle should not be left alone for a long time.
